Though Covington, Washington was incorporated as a city in 1997, it has roots dating back more than 100 years when the area was known as Jenkins Prairie.
According to the Covington Chamber of Commerce website, the most recent census data shows that Covington has 17,900 residents from more than 5,639 households. The average household size is 3.09 people, and the median household income is $77,200. With 89.9% of Covington living in owner-occupied homes, the median home value is $300,000. The median age of a Covington resident is 32.1 years old. Covington itself sits at an elevation of 420 feet and is approximately 6.75 square miles in size.
Covington is located between Kent and Maple Valley, along State Road 516 (known as Kent-Kangley Road and SE 272nd). It’s primary commercial section sits at the intersection of SR-516 and Highway 18. The city is run by a city council-manager municipal structure, and it receives the majority of its services from Kent (e.g., Kent Fire Department, Kent School District, etc.).
Covington’s primary businesses are retail, and the downtown core along and near 272nd includes popular shopping centers including Costco, Fred Meyer, Petco, Kohl’s, Office Depot, Walgreen’s and Wal-Mart.
